Costume Design in 'Zindagi Tamasha' A Journey of Creativity and Cultural Expression
As a costume designer, my role in Zindagi Tamasha (2020) was a deeply rewarding challenge. This film, which was Pakistan's official submission to the 93rd Oscars, required a careful and thoughtful approach to costume design that reflected the diverse facets of Pakistani society. Working alongside Sundus Hashmi, we faced the exciting task of portraying the contrast between traditional and modern, rural and urban, conservative and liberal within the rich cultural fabric of the country.
The characters in Zindagi Tamasha were multifaceted, with emotional depth and complex backstories. Designing costumes for them wasn’t just about choosing outfits—it was about understanding their lives, professions, and emotional journeys. Each piece of clothing had to serve as a reflection of their inner worlds, while also grounding them in the context of the story’s cultural setting.
From the very beginning, we worked closely with director Sarmad Khoosat to ensure that the costumes aligned with his vision. Our goal was to create realistic and authentic looks that would enhance the actors' performances and bring the characters to life. We also had to be mindful of the narrative and the film’s social themes, ensuring that the costumes spoke to the issues the story raised.
The journey of designing for Zindagi Tamasha was about finding a balance between the traditional and the contemporary, infusing every character’s wardrobe with meaning and depth. The process involved countless discussions, fittings, and tweaks, but the result was a visually stunning portrayal of Pakistani society that resonated with authenticity.
It was an honor to be part of a film that not only showcases the richness of our culture but also tells a story that’s deeply personal and impactful. Zindagi Tamasha wasn’t just about the costumes—it was about using design to amplify the emotional and social themes that shaped the narrative.
